Brett Jackson, new principal at Nyssa High School, got his first taste of the giving nature of the Nyssa community with the delivery of Hero Day supplies by community supporters Jewell Maine and Susan Barton. The donations were “awesome,” he said. Nyssa Elementary principal Matt Murray and Middle School principal Luke Cleaver also accepted boxes of donations from the effort.Hero Day, held Aug. 6, saw community members coming together to honor Nyssa School District teachers with an evening of music, food, games and time to visit. People brought school supplies to donate, and the sale of hot dogs and popcorn provided funds to buy more. Along with the boxes of supplies, more than $270 was raised for school supplies. NYSSA – This Thursday, there will be a retirement party for Faith Adams from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Nyssa Library.
Faith has served the Nyssa community at the library for over 25 years. Stop by the library, at 319 Main St., and wish her well in her retirement.
• Two new businesses are now open in Nyssa! Nyssa Mercantile, a True Value Hardware store, is now open.
The store is open Monday-Saturday, closed on Labor Day, with a grand opening set for November. You can order items online at TrueValue.com with free shipping to the Nyssa store.
Across the street, at 116 Main St., is Launch, a co-working cost sharing office space offering a variety of options for the entrepreneur or self-employed individual. Launch is also a maker space with equipment to share in the areas of photography, video and robotics.
A four-week videography class starts Sept. 4 and will be held on Wednesdays from 4:30-6 p.m. A remote job search class starts Sept. 3 from 12 noon to 1 p.m. Bring your own lunch and join the class.

• The Nyssa Community Food Pantry would be happy to help area gardeners with their excess produce. Particularly needed are tomatoes and peppers. The pantry is open from 4-7 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the corner of 5th and Main Streets, with the entrance on the south side of the building. Thank you for supporting the pantry!
