Donald Curtis passed on February 29, 2106. He is survived by his wife Freda (Simmons) Curtis and children Jeffery D. Curtis of Vale, Deborah K. Trouten of Kuna, Donald K. Curtis of Utah and Dianna L. Baugh of Kuna. Five grandchildren: Alyssa Stam, Morgan Hart, Jordan Smith, Jacob Curtis and Alexandria Curtis, and two great grandchildren.


Donald was born March 11, 1937 in Coffeeville, Kansas and graduated high school in Enterprise, Oregon. Enterprise is the place that was always his hometown in his heart. As a young man there he cruised timber and surveyed some of his first roads in the Wallowa Mountains for Boise Cascade. He went to college and became a civil engineer. He worked for the Soil Conservation Service and then the BLM. He retired from Federal Civil Service in 1998. After retirement he did contract surveying and pipeline design work for the Vale District BLM office and the Vale Irrigation District. Donald was an avid hunter his whole life. He was an accomplished gunsmith.


Lifetime accomplishments:


26 years US Army Reserve Retired Master Sergeant


Member of Reserve shooting team awarded the presidents hundred; the top one hundred shooters in the United States three times.


Trained the local National Guard Armored Brigade soldiers in m14 marksmanship in 2004 prior to their deployment in Iraq.


Designed and supervised numerous irrigation and water conservation projects in Baker and Malheur Counties.


As a member of local gun clubs where he lived in Oregon he:


Taught gun safety to others


Supported and promoted Civilian Marksmanship Programs (CMP)


Found, mapped, surveyed and laid out Location of the Vale Shooting Complex.


Member and supporter of the Oregon Ducks Unlimited.


Member and instructor for the Malheur County Search and Rescue.


Lifetime member of the National Rifle Association


Donald’s life is one of numerous individual achievements, some lost over passing of time. While his passing is a loss to those around him, we can remember his accomplishments changed lives and have comfort that he is with us always in those changes.
