Coming Up: Patriot Weekend in Vale, plus history and recovery events

PATRIOT EVENT: A weekend of activities will celebrate the contributions of first responders and military veterans Sept. 9 and 10, culminating in a barbecue and ceremony on Monday, Sept. 11, in Wadleigh Park in Vale.

The Patriot Weekend activities include a car show, art, vendors, a cornhole tournament, food, music and dancing plus a coloring contest, story time and face painting for the kids. The barbecue at 5 p.m. Monday will include a color guard and recognition of veterans and first responders, as it marks the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers, Pentagon and United Flight 93.

The event is organized by the Vale Community Coalition and American Legion Post and Auxiliary 96.

HISTORY: Frances Rempel will lead a discussion on the history of rural, unincorporated communities of Malheur County on Thursday, Sept. 14, at the Malheur Country Historical Society’s monthly luncheon meeting. The meeting will be at the Vale Seniors and Community Center, 100 Longfellow St. S. It starts at 11:30 a.m. with lunch, including potato bar, green salad, rolls and dessert. The cost is $12 for lunch.

RECOVERY: Hands Around the Park, an event to celebrate recovery, is set for 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, at Laxon Park, 311 N.W. 4th St., Ontario. The Malheur County Prevention Coalition and Lifeways are putting on the event.

TOTS: Ontario will celebrate its signature spuds at the Tater Tots Festival on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 15-16, on Depot Lane. Presented by Revitalize Ontario, the event will feature music, exhibitors, adult beverages and food. The festival starts at 1 p.m. Friday and wraps up at 9 p.m. Saturday.
