ONTARIO – The season is still early, but with the first meet on the books, the Ontario girls track and field team appears poised to make a run at a Greater Oregon League title.

Competing in the team’s Icebreaker meet last Friday on the Ontario track, the Tiger girls put up 169.5 points to grab the team title.

Nyssa, with 105 points, was second, and the visiting 1A Adrian team was third with 98 points.

As in past years, Ontario finds strength in the sprint events.

Meagan Houston, a freshman, made the most of her first high school meet, clocking a 13.39 second 100-meter race and her first win. Senior Abbey Wood took second. Houston and Wood combined again in the 200-meter race, taking third and fourth respectively.

Junior Jazmine Ware added points to the Tiger total with a first in the 100-meter hurdles. She also was first in the long jump.

“We did lose some athletes to graduation, but I am impressed with the group of freshmen we have on the team this year,” said Paul Bentz, sprint coach. “With some of the girls we have back and the addition of the new faces, we are looking good.”

The new faces proved Ontario also may fare well in the distance events.

Freshman Alayna Smith could not keep up with Nyssa’s Olivia Page in the 1500 meters, but did finish second in the event. Page, with the graduation of Delia Deleon last May, carries the hopes of the Bulldogs in the distance events.

The Tigers also can expect some team points in the field events, as sophomore Katie Adams took first in both the discus and javelin.

Even nursing injuries and absent some members, the Nyssa girls also look to be strong in the field events after the performance at the Icebreaker.

Senior Corrin Shuster cleared 8 feet in the pole vault, taking the title. Sailor Hartley, still out with a basketball injury, did not compete.

Kierra Hernandez also was out due to basketball injuries, but senior Dennet Flores stepped up for the Bulldogs, taking fourth in the shot put and second in the discus.

“It will take us a while to get everyone back as we have some sitting out with some nagging injuries,” said Nyssa throwing coach Vic Woods.

As the lone 1A school in the competition, Adrian outdid both 3A Riverside and 4A Baker in the point standings.

The Lopes were led by senior Shyanne Allaire and her first-place in the shot put, followed by a third-place in the discus. Junior Roby Young was first in the triple jump.

The Ontario boys, while scoring high in the running events, lagged in the field events.

In the field, the Tigers mustered two third-place finishes from junior Olee Shell in the triple jump and junior Mikey Lopez in the javelin.

The Nyssa boys finished ahead of the Tigers, falling only to Fruitland in the boys team score.

Bulldog sophomore Armando Pedraza ran away from the pack in the 3000- meters, crossing the line 19 seconds before the rest of the field.

Nyssa junior Jose Sanchez’s winning throw of 155 feet, 7 inches was 35 feet farther than the second-place throw by fellow Bulldog Ethan Draper.

Both Nyssa and Ontario are preparing for the Buck Track Classic this Thursday in Pendleton.

Adrian was scheduled to compete in the Vale Small Schools Meet on Tuesday. Results were not available at press time.
