Another new business has opened in Nyssa!
Penn Global, at 313 Main St., is an independent insurance agency working in the areas of Medicare, supplemental insurance, Advantage plans and drug plans. The annual enrollment period, the time to make changes to your plan, runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7.
Jackie Stoneman is the local agent. While she lives in Vale now, Jackie is familiar with the Nyssa community having previously lived here with three of her children graduates of Nyssa High.
Office hours are Monday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday from 3-7 p.m. and Sunday noon to 4 p.m., or by appointment. Give Jackie a call at 541-212-8120. Welcome Jackie and Penn Global!
• Events at the Nyssa Library this week include a crochet class and a drop-in craft class both on Thursday. Stop by and see what new books are available and what other activities are on the calendar.
• Burn days start on Friday, Oct. 18, and end Monday, Oct. 28. Remember, burn days are for yard debris burning only. Use care with your burning. If you have questions about burn days, stop by city hall.
• There are several Halloween events scheduled for Oct. 31 in Nyssa, according to the Nyssa Chamber of Commerce.
Businesses will offer trick or treating starting at 3:30 p.m. Look for the “Happy Halloween” pumpkin sign in the window of the participating businesses.
The annual Community Harvest Party will be from 5-7 p.m. in front of the Nyssa School District office building. This free event is for the entire community with carnival games, a bounce house, hot dogs, chili and hot chocolate.
Wear a costume or blue and white and show your school spirit.

Oregon Trail Arena is the site for a Trunk or Treat from 6-7:30 p.m.

And Halloween isn’t just for kids anymore. Nyssa Senior Citizens will host a Halloween Bingo party starting at 5 p.m., and costumes are encouraged.
• The Nyssa Elementary PTO just completed another successful Harvest Festival. Organizers reflecting on the event said they were reminded of the amazing community we live in, and they offered a big thanks to all of the sponsors. This event would not be financially possible without them.
The PTO also thanked the teachers, firefighters, police, parent volunteers, high school student volunteers and Umpqua Bank employee who worked at the carnival. They are an important part of making this event happen.
The carnival is in the planning stages for a few months before its big debut. The PTO said: “We want to thank all those who represented the PTO in organizing and orchestrating the event. The money earned by the carnival is put back into Nyssa Elementary School. It helps teachers with classroom needs, students have opportunities for field trips and activities, and much more. We are so grateful to live in a community that works so hard to support its youth!”
