VALE – Rep. Greg Walden, Oregon’s sole Republican federal lawmaker, joined a growing chorus of criticism Tuesday regarding a series of statements and tweets by President Donald Trump.
Sunday the President tweeted a long statement aimed at “progressive Democratic congresswomen who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe” and asked “Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested place from which they came.”
The comments were apparently aimed at four minority congresswomen: Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York), Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota), Ayanna S. Pressley (D-Massachusetts) and Rashida Tlaib (D-Michigan).
The tweets and subsequent comments by the President Monday, created a firestorm of criticism from both sides of the political aisle.
Walden (R-Hood River) has added his disapproval of the President’s comments in a statement released earlier today.
“America is a nation of immigrants and I do not, and will never, condone discrimination. The President’s recent tweets do not reflect the values that we hold dear in America and they are comments that should not be made about any American citizen regardless of who they are or where they work,” Walden said in a statement.
Walden pointed out other comments asserting the United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency is operating concentration-like camps are off base.
Those comments, he said, “distract from the real issues our nation faces, like the humanitarian crisis at the border, the rising cost of health care and providing for our veterans and active duty military.”
The House is poised to vote on a resolution tonight condemning the President’s remarks.
