ONTARIO – Area music lovers can hear one of the nation’s best new pop bands Friday night at the Meyer McLean Performing Arts Theatre at Four Rivers Cultural Center.
Sister Sparrow and The Dirty Birds will kick off their show at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 and tickets are $10.
Fronted by singer and songwriter Arleigh Kincheloe, Sister Sparrow and The Dirty Birds delivers a low-key, bluesy melody and the group is signed with the record label Atlantic.
“Their reviews have been amazing, big profiles in the Washington Post, the New York Times,” said Matt Stringer, executive director of Four Rivers Cultural Center.
Stringer said Sister Sparrow is a band on the rise.
“I really think they will blow up and become mega stars. They are poised for that,” said Stringer.
Stringer said the sound of the band is unique and rests on the powerful vocals of Kincheloe.
“Her voice is, I think, beautiful. That is certainly kind of what I think people respond to. And I love that they are kind of brassy. The instrumentation is really interesting and the harmonica is really distinct,” said Stringer.
Stringer said Ontario isn’t typically a stop for any band on a long-range tour. He said he reached out to Atlantic Records earlier this year to find bands he believed that would fit Ontario.
“I contacted a friend of mine who is the head of A&R (artists and repertoire) at Atlantic. I asked if he could give me a list of bands that are really talented but, more importantly, can tour actively and successfully already and have a solid online presence, with a depository of music that shows their validity,” said Stringer.
Stringer said his friend offered 15 bands and Sister Sparrow was one of the selections.
“A lot of times acts like this don’t necessarily want to come to Ontario. They question whether anyone would know them or would anybody really come or attend,” said Stringer.
Stringer said he often explains that “this community doesn’t have the opportunity to see shows like this very often.”
