Crews clear road to Owyhee Reservoir

Water was running high on the Owyhee River last week. A thunderstorm caused mudslides that blocked Owyhee Lake Road, stranding campers and youth at a church camp near the Owyhee Dam. The road was opened up Thursday night. (The Enterprise/Kristine de Leon).

ADRIAN – The main road to the Owyhee Reservoir that was blocked in several places because of a series of mudslides is now open, according to the Malheur County Sheriff’s Office.

Undersheriff Travis Johnson said today that Owyhee Lake Road was cleared of mudslides late Thursday night.

Crews from the Malheur County Road Department, the Nyssa Road District and the Owyhee Irrigation District worked to open the road. The Vale District of the Bureau of Land Management also provided a bulldozer to help with the effort.

A severe thunderstorm rolled over Malheur County Wednesday night and created the mudslides that closed the road. More than 100 people – campers and youth at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints camp – were isolated by the mudslides.
