MONMOUTH – The Adrian girls track team powered through wet and slick conditions last week to win the state title in the OSAA 1A State Track and Field Championship.

The meet, held last Friday and Saturday at Western Oregon University, was punctuated by occasional thunder.

That didn’t stop the Antelope girls, who amassed 57 points for the win. Adrian was followed by St. Paul with 54 points and Joseph with 46.5 points.

Adrian’s Roby Young won state titles in the 200-meter and 400-meter races.

She posted the top qualifying time of 1:01.21 in the 400 prelims on Friday and sped to a time of 59.35 seconds in the finals Saturday.

Young’s time was a new personal best, a solid accomplishment considering the wet and dreary conditions.

“I was so excited for my 400 time – I broke the school record by over a second,” Young said. “I’m just feeling really really grateful for my coaches and all the work that I’ve been in at this point, because it definitely paid off this weekend.”

Young said she was especially excited to race against Camas Valley’s Noel Krissie in the 200 event.

After falling .10 seconds short of Krissie’s time in the 200 prelims, Young was determined to beat her opponent in the finals.

She did.

As it poured rain and the wind howled, Young posted a time of 26.63 seconds in the 200 finals, beating Krissie by .08 seconds.

“It was a very good race,” Young said.

Adrian’s relay teams also were strong contenders in the 4×100 and 4×400 relays.

The Antelopes’ Shayla Griffin, Kenzie Sorrell, Riley Lucas and Sadey Speelmon finished third in the 4×400 with a time of 4:23.50.

In the 4×100, Griffin, Sorrell and Lucas were joined by Lizzy Nielson and placed fourth with a time of 53.20 seconds.

The Antelopes also picked team points in the javelin, with Adrian junior Hannah Bertalotto finishing second.

Young contributed additional points by finishing fourth in the triple jump and fifth in the high jump. Other notable finishes included Speelmon’s eighth place in the triple jump and Nielson’s 11th place in the long jump.

In the boys meet, the Antelopes finished 19th place.
