Vale group invites community to feast and talk about food

VALE – A group of community members are holding a town hall meeting at Chavelitas Restaurant in Vale this Thursday to discuss food, education and agriculture in the community.

The discussion will focus on ideas on building a local food system and using grant money from the Oregon Food Bank, according to Tom Vialpando, who is helping organize the event.

Vialpando is a member of a small group of Vale residents that recently received $4,600 from the Oregon Food Bank’s Food, Education, Agriculture, Solutions Together program. The grant supports long-term projects intended to enhance community food systems.

“We want to hear from folks in the community to see where the greatest need is and where to put that grant money toward,” Vialpando said.

Vialpando said the conversation will be facilitated by Tracy Gagnon, a community food systems developer with the Oregon Food Bank in Salem.

The event, sponsored by the Oregon Food Bank and the Vale Food Pantry, will start at 5:30 p.m. and go until 8:30 p.m. Food and refreshments will be provided, along with childcare.
