Nampa man involved in Ontario standoff dies

ONTARIO – The 19-year-old man who held police at bay for hours last week in Ontario died in a Boise hospital Monday.

Authorities said Heriberto “Eddie” Ortega, 19, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound that ended the siege last Thursday in southeast Ontario.

Ortega was the passenger in a car stopped by police for a traffic violation. There was gunfire and a foot chase that led to a Southeast Sixth Avenue home. Ortega took over a second-floor apartment, where he stayed for hours as police negotiated his surrender.

Malheur County District Attorney Dave Goldthorpe said police entered the apartment early Friday after hearing a gunshot. They found Ortega critically wounded.

As of Monday, police were still seeking the driver of the car, identified as Irene Enedelia Pena, 32, of Ontario.
