In the past few years, my mantra has been, “Plan for retirement, cuz it’s a really cool gig.” On Friday, the community is invited to join Pat Oliver in celebrating his retirement from the U.S. Postal Service. The celebration starts at 7 p.m. at Thunderegg Coffee Company.
• Nyssa Nite Rodeo activities begin on Saturday with both the Junior Barrel Qualifier and the fourth annual Richard Mejia Memorial Roping. Both events take place at Oregon Trail Arena in Nyssa.
Junior Barrel Qualifier starts at 10 a.m. Contestants are split into two age groups: 13 and under and 14-18. The top 10 in each age group will participate in the Nyssa Nite Rodeo.
Ropers in Malheur County and counties touching Malheur and Gem County, Idaho with a roping level of 2.5 are invited to participate. Again, the top 10 ropers will qualify for the rodeo.
Rodeo events continue on Tuesday, June 12 with the Queen’s Banquet.
• The Nyssa Library starts the summer reading program this week. To encourage young readers who ride their bikes to the library, the library will give a small “attaboy” prize to kids who ride to the library wearing their helmets. Summer reading isn’t just about reading!
The community is invited to the library Saturday to hear Tommy the Singing Nurse, to listen to songs and Thomas Ruston’s story of giving back to his community. While you are there, pick up a summer reading calendar and get started reading.
• During June, lunch is available for children ages 1-18 at Nyssa School District’s Main Cafeteria. Breakfast is served from 7:30-8:30 a.m. and lunch from 11 a.m. to noon.
• The City of Nyssa will perform a fire hydrant flush from 2 to 8 a.m. Thursday.
