No state play for Malheur County golf teams

PENDLETON – The state high school golf tournament teed off on Tuesday with no local teams participating.

The teams of Vale, Nyssa and Ontario traveled to Pendleton for the Special District 3 tournament.

In boys competition, Nyssa finished eighth and Vale was ninth.

The Bulldogs were led by Kaleb Draper’s two-day total of 239. For the Vikings, Joseph Bentz fired a 231 to lead Vale.

Heppner/Ione, Grant Union, Burns and Echo/ Stanfield will represent the district at state.

In girls play, the Vikings finished just out of the trip to state in fourth while the Bulldogs were fifth.

Vale’s Miranda Raven shot a two-day total 211 to lead Vale. Nyssa was led by Zanizia Suarez and her 215. The lone golfer for Ontario, Alanna Stark, finished the tournament with a 231.

The district will be represented by Heppner, La Grande and Baker.

“This was not a bad effort by our kids,” said Vale Coach Tom Snook. “The course played extremely tough with deep rough around the whole course. We had battled consistency all season and it caused trouble for us in the tournament. All of the kids posted a good day on at least one of the days.”

The Vale team will have a different look next year as the Vikings see the departure of King, Rindlisbacher, Hansen and Duckworth.

“They are all great kids that helped make this a fun year,” Snook said. “I also want to take the time to thank our assistant coaches, Chance Skerjanec and Autumn Butler, for all their help this season. The team would like to thank Country View Golf Course for all their support for our program. It was a pretty interesting and fun season.”
