UMATILLA – The Nyssa boys and girls teams both claimed second-place showings at the Eastern Oregon League district track meet that wrapped up Saturday. 

The boys came just short of the title, with 157 points to Burns’ 165. 

The Nyssa girls scored 134 points, compared to 151 for Burns. 

Thirteen Bulldogs qualified for this week’s state track meet, which will be at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field in Eugene. Field events start at 10 a.m. Thursday and the meet ends Friday for the 3A ranks. 

Leading the Bulldogs will be senior Tye Anderson, who qualified in four events. Junior Roberto Amezquita and sophomore Raul Ruiz each picked up state berths in three events. 

For the Nyssa girls, senior Kierra Hernandez will throw the discus and shot put. Junior Madisyn Hartley will compete in the long jump and triple jump. 

Two Vale High School athletes also will go to state after strong performances in the district meet. 

Junior Morgan Harrison took a second-place finish in the high jump. Classmate Beau Belnap cleared 11 feet, 3 inches in the district meet.
