Catch up on Vale golf and baseball, Nyssa tennis

Vale golf

THE MATCH: Hosting Burns and La Grande, the Vale boys finished third last Friday at the Country View course. 

TEAM SCORES: Burns, 371. La Grande, 419. Vale, 451 (Joseph Bentz, 104: Trevor Romans, 109: Josh Duckworth, 118: Webbyn Mason, 130). 

COACH’S COMMENTS: “This was a good opportunity for us to get play for all our boys,” said Vale coach Tom Snook. “Tournaments like this are good experience for young kids to get a chance to play tournament golf with kids from other schools. The upcoming tournaments will be good tests for us in our prep for district.”

UP NEXT: The Vikings travel to Union on Friday to take on Buffalo Peak with both boys and girls on the course.

Vale baseball

THE GAMES: The Vale baseball team split with the visiting Irrigon Knights last Friday in Eastern Oregon League play, winning game one 14-6 before dropping the second game, 11-9. On Monday, the Vikings were in Parma, downing the Panthers, 16-3.

HIGHLIGHTS: IIn the win over New Plymouth, the Viks had eight runs in the 4th inning, capped off by a three-run home run by Keegan Mizuta. Kade Haueter hit a bases loaded triple in the 5th inning to close out the win.

Vale had 15 hits in game one against Irrigon, but then saw the bats quiet with only 7 hits in the game two loss. 

The victory in game one did cost the Vikings as Cade Perry went out with an injury and may be lost for the remainder of the season. 

In the loss, Vale was down 11-4 in the 6th inning before striking back with 5 runs. With runners on the base, Vale could not pull off the comeback win. 

SEASON RECORD: 7-2 Eastern Oregon League, 11-7 overall.

UP NEXT: The Vikings travel to Burns (5-3 league, 7-10 overall) on Friday for league play. The Vikings are currently in second place in the league standings while the Hilanders sit in the fourth slot.

Nyssa tennis

THE MATCHES: The Nyssa tennis team played to a 5-5 tie versus La Grande last Thursday. The Bulldogs took a huge 9-1 victory over Ontario.
