Get ready for some fun at the annual Nyssa Volunteer Fire Department dinner and auction

NYSSA – Coming up this Saturday is the Nyssa Volunteer Fire Department Dinner and Auction, at the Nyssa Eagles at 2nd Street and Bower Avenue.

Dinner choices are: chicken, $15; tri-tip, $20; or a combination for $25. Each meal includes baked potato, salad, beans and a roll. Beverages will be available.

Tickets are half price for children age 4 to 12, and free for age 3 and under. Children are welcome at the event until 9 p.m.; the dance is for age 21 or older. Music will be provided by DJ Rick. Contact a member of the fire department for tickets.

• The Owyhee Riding Club kicks off its season of activities Saturday with the Owyhee Jr. Rough Stock Bulls Barrels & Broncs. The event will be at 7 p.m. at the Oregon Trail Arena in Nyssa, with registration at 5 p.m.

Admission is $2 for ages 7 to 14; $5 for ages 15 and up. Children under 6 are free.

There will be mini bareback horses, novice bulls, novice bronc horses, barrel racing and mutton busting. Buckles will be awarded to the winner in each category and payouts to those who place in the top three.

The cook shack will be open so come out and enjoy some junior rodeo events. Faith Riders, a local drill team, will perform and carry sponsor flags.

Also on Saturday, the queen contest for the 2018 year will start at 10 a.m. Contestants will compete in Horsemanship, Flag and Arena Presentation, Speeches & Modeling, and current events.

The fun continues April 29 with the Buckle Playday Series 1 of 6. According to arena director Donna Barnard, “This will be the first day of a 6-event buckle playday series (ending in September) where people will accumulate points and highest in each age group at the end of series will win a buckle.”

The club will also host a clinic at 11 a.m. Sunday for anyone who needs to get their coggins blood test and health certificate done. Only $35 a horse, these are good for six months. For information, e-mail [email protected]

• Saturday is the deadline for the “Drive For School Spirit” orders to have a paw print or “N” on your drive or walkway. This is a fundraiser for the Nyssa Elementary School Parent/Teacher Organization. Order forms are available at the elementary school. The cost is $25.
