High school league play opens around Malheur County despite weather challenges

THE GAMES: The Vikings split on the road, falling to the combined team of Joseph/Enterprise/Wallowa, 3-1 in game one. In game two, the Vikings downed the Eagles, 9-3 on Friday, April 6. 

HIGHLIGHT PLAY: In game one, the Viks outhit Joseph 6 to 1, but left runners standing on the bases numerous times. Game two found the Vale bats coming alive with 13 hits. 

TOP PERFORMERS: In game one, Matt McBride took the loss on the mound, giving up only one hit. Tanner Hamilton had Vale’s lone RBI. Game two saw Karson Brown picking up the win. McBride and Kade Haueter each had three hits to go with three RBIs. 

COACH’S ASSESSMENT: “Game one was an old fashion pitchers duel,” said Vale coach Rick Yraguen. “We had our chances to win the game, but could not get the big hit when we needed it. Karson and Matt were in control in both games, they really kept them off balance.”

RECORD: 1-1 Eastern Oregon League, 3-4 overall. 

NEXT UP: Vale was scheduled to host Nyssa (1-1 league, 1-10 overall) Tuesday. Due to press time, results were unavailable. The Vikings host Riverside (1-1 league, 4-5 overall) for two games this Friday, starting at 2 p.m. Continuing at home, the Viks host Homedale on Monday, April 16, with the first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m.

THE MATCH: The Nyssa team took a 7-3 win over Payette on Monday, April 2.

INDIVIDUAL RESULTS: Girls: First singles: Anita Bemjamin (Nyssa) over Fini Proehi (Payette), 7-5, 6-3. Second singles: Chloe Richards (Nyssa) over Rose Winsor (Payette), 6-1, 6-1. Third singles: Katharine Linde (Payette) over Hope Prozanski (Nyssa), 2-6, 6-4, 7-6. First doubles: Savanna Kesler/Hailey Long (Nyssa) over Aubree Bradshaw/Megan McKenzie (Payette), 6-4, 6-3. Second doubles: Liz Mason/Lauren Cummins (Payette) over Kristy Benjamin/Makayla Kesler (Nyssa), 6-3, 6-2. Boys: First singles: Eli Esplin (Nyssa) over Sam Hsu (Payette), 6-2, 6-2. COACH’S COMMENTS: “We have some spring break cobwebs to shake off, but but we are continuing to show improvement everyday,” said Nyssa coach Kent Blanchard.  

Vale and Nyssa golf

THE GAME: Both the Nyssa and Vale golf teams made the trip to Pendleton last Friday, competing in the Pendleton Invite. 

TOP PERFORMERS: In the boys competition, the Vikings did not field a team while the Bulldogs made the trip with only three golfers. For Nyssa, Cole Ballantyne carded a 119 to lead the Bulldogs. Kessen Kimball fired a 160 followed by Luis Medrano with a 162.

Burns took the team title with a combined 401.

Heppner took the title on the girls side, firing a 430 combined score.

For Nyssa, Zanizia Suarez led the Dawgs with a 120. Summer Stephen finished the day with a 137 with Abi Wachtler just one stroke behind at 138. Erin Rust finished with a 153.

Suarez wass consistent throughout the day, firing a 59 on the front 9 and following it up with a 61 on the back 9. Stephen shot a 68 on the front before falling one stroke on the back, shooting a 69.

For Vale, Miranda Raven fired a 121 with Morgan King shooting a score of 123. Hammah Hansen shot a 128 with Kaylee Harris finishing with a 143.

Raven opened with a 63 on the front 9 before coming back to shoot a 58 on the back 9. Hansen shot 64 on both the front and back end of the course while King fired a 60 on the front before falling back to a 63 on the back side of the course.

COACH’S COMMENTS: “We got some really nice efforts from out girls at this tournament,” said Vale coach Tom Snook. “ All got off to a rough start but recovered very well and improved throughout the day. I was really pleased with their effort. It was a good look at our district course and some of our tough district competition.”

UP NEXT: The Vikings host both Ontario and Nyssa on Thursday at 3 p.m. at Country View Golf Course.
