VALE – Amassing 130 points, the Nyssa boys track and field team won the trophy at the Oregon Trail Invitational last Friday in Vale.

The Harper Hornets were the top 1A team in the rankings, taking fourth overall with 63 points. Ontario was fifth, and Adrian was seventh. The host Vikings ended in 10th.

With the rain holding off and the wind relatively calm, local teams had better times and throwing distances, enough for many to rise in the state rankings.

In the 4A state standings, Ontario’s Alex Espinoza ran a 23.34-second 200 meters, a first-place finish that pushed him to the third best time in the state. His winning time in the 400 meters of 52.70 seconds is the fourth best time in the state.

In state 3A standings, the Nyssa 4-by-100 relay team of Tye Anderson, Mario Gramajo, Raul Ruiz and Roberto Amezquita have the fifth best time in the state after Friday’s meet. The Bulldogs ran the track in 45.95 seconds.

Nyssa senior Jonathan Iniguez cleared 13 feet in the pole vault Friday. That left him tied with Pleasant Hill’s Dylan Hopper atop the state standings in 3A.

Bulldog senior Tye Anderson broke into the top 5 in rankings in two events at the Invite. He is now fourth in the state in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump.

The meet also helped out some 1A athletes.

Adrian sophomore Michael Babcock now has the fastest 1A state times in both the 100-meter and 200-meter races.

Harper freshman Corbin Palmer ran a personal-best time of 44.52 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles, for the fourth fastest time in the state.

Harper senior Garrett Fischer’s throw of 40 feet, 7.5 inches placed him fifth in the state standings in the shot put. The meet also pushed Harper junior Morgan Butler to second in state in both long jump and triple jump.

For the girls, Ontario senior Abbey Wood has the fourth fastest time in the 100 meters after posting a time of 13.27 seconds. Tiger junior Jazmine Ware jumped to the third-best 4A time in the state by running a 16.69-second 100-meter hurdle race.

The Tiger team of Wood, Ware, Lexy Jordan and Meagan Houston crossed the line in 51.03 seconds in the 4-by-100 relay, fastest in the state 4A ranks.

Back from a basketball injury, Nyssa senior Sailor Hartley jumped to the second best height in the state 3A rankings with a pole vault of 9 feet on Friday.

In the 1A ranking, Adrian’s Morgan Bayes used the day to climb to the top of the state in the 100-meter hurdles. Bayes also sits atop the standings in the 300-meter hurdles, a full second ahead of the rest of the state.

Bayes joined Sadey Speelmon, Roby Young and Kenzie Sorrell to clock the third fastest time in the 4-by-100 relay to date, crossing the line in 54.47 seconds.

Bayes, Speelmon and Young joined with Shayla Griffin to push to the second fastest time in the 1A ranks in the 4-by-400 relay. Young also jumped to the second in the state after the triple jump competition.

After Friday’s field events, Adrian’s Shyanne Allaire has the third best javelin throw in the state.

Vale was scheduled to attend the Grant Union Small Schools Meet on Tuesday, with results unavailable due to press time. The Vikings will join Adrian and Jordan Valley at the Burns Lions Invitational this Saturday.

Jordan Valley and Harper will be in Crane Friday at the Ranchers Invitational.

The Nyssa squad goes to Middleton on Thursday for the Middleton Invite before joining Ontario on Friday at the Patriot Invitational at Centennial High School. The Patriot meet will feature a number of large Idaho schools in attendance.
