Vale Baseball

THE GAME: In the first game back from spring break, the Vale baseball team ran over Parma 15-5 on Monday.

HIGHLIGHTS: Parma led 5-3 going into the sixth inning. Amid a number of Vikings walks, Vale scored 7 runs to take control of the game.

Tanner Hamilton had 3 RBIs to lead Vale. Matt McBride, Kade Perry and Josh Arritola each picked up one score in the sixth.

COACH’S COMMENTS: “We are still having trouble with control in pitching, but tonight, the trio of McBride, Brown and Mizuta pitched their way out of trouble numerous times,” said Vale coach Rick Yraguen.

RECORD: 2-3 overall.

NEXT UP: The Vikings start Eastern Oregon League play this Friday with a trip to Joseph for two games against the combined team of Joseph/Enterprise/Wallowa (7-2 overall). After the trip home, the Vikings will go to Weiser on Saturday. League play continues for the Viks as they welcome Nyssa (0-7 overall) on Tuesday, April 10, at 5 p.m.

NOTEWORTHY: The Vikings are currently ranked 14th in the state polls. The combined team of Joseph is ranked sixth while Stanfield/Echo is ranked fourth. Both are league opponents. 

Ontario Softball

THE GAMES: The Ontario Tigers defeated the Yamhill-Carlton Tigers 8-7 last Thursday.

The Tigers were in Nampa for the Sugar Town Tournament on Friday and Saturday. Ontario fell to Nampa 15-5 on Friday and beat Columbia 10-0. On Saturday, the Tigers pounded Lakeland 20-3 in a game called after four innings. Ontario also took care of Fruitland, 7-0.

HIGHLIGHTS: Against Yamhill-Carlton, Lexi Navarrete allowed seven hits and one walk while striking out 11.

Navarette also posted a grand slam in the win over Columbia while allowing just two hits. She picked up her second grand slam of the weekend in the win over Lakeland. Amy Hernandez also hit a home run in the game.

RECORD: 7-1 overall.

NEXT UP: The 17th-ranked Tigers were scheduled to meet the Burns Hilanders for two games Tuesday. Due to press time, results were unavailable.

Ontario will open the Greater Oregon League season on Monday, hosting La Grande for two games. 

NOTEWORTHY: The top-ranked team in the state, McLoughlin, sits in the Greater Oregon League with the Tigers. Ontario is currently ranked 13th in the most recent state polls.
