NYSSA SOFTBALL

THE GAMES: The Nyssa softball team started the season with a pair of wins before dropping two home games. On the road to start the season, the Dawgs took care of Cole Valley Christian, 16-0, on Tuesday, March 13. Hosting Adrian on Thursday, March 15, Nyssa took a 14-3 victory. On Saturday, March 17, the Bulldogs fell to New Plymouth 23-4 in game one and dropped a 9-6 contest in game two. Game one was called after five innings.

HIGHLIGHTS: In the New Plymouth games, Nicole Lambie started game one, picking up five strikeouts. Brenda Trujillo had a two-run home run.

Hailey Castro picked up three strikeouts in game two, going six innings. In relief, Lambie picked up six strikeouts. Sabrina Castro had two RBIs.

COACH’S COMMENTS: “We came back from that first game a whole new team. We bounced back in game two and started off great, played solid as a team,” said Coach Jaimi Greenwood.

RECORD: 2-2 overall.

VALE TRACK AND FIELD

THE MEET: The Vale track and field team started the season off with a short trip down the road to the Diana Thurmond Invitational in Harper on Friday.

HIGHLIGHTS: A young Viking team saw Jennifer Zanabriga take first place in the 3,000 meters and Morgan Harrison leaping 5 feet, 2 inches in the high jump, also a first-place finish.

COACH’S COMMENTS: “As a team, we compiled 28 new recent records and 17 personal records,” said coach Lance Lovitt. “Morgan Harrison set a PR in the 200-meter and won the high jump with a 5 foot, 2 inch jump and almost broke the school record.”   

NEXT UP: Vale hosted a small school meet on Tuesday, March 20. Due to press time, results were unavailable. 

NYSSA GOLF

THE MATCH: With only three golfers on the course, the Nyssa girls golf team failed to qualify for a team score, opening the season at the Weiser Invite on Wednesday, March 14. The tournament was held at Rolling Hills Golf Course.

INDIVIDUAL SCORES: Abbi Wachter, 68; Sarah Stephens, 78; Summer Stephens, 72. 

COACH’S COMMENT: “The girls had a great day yesterday considering it was their first tournament of the year for all three of them, and for the Stephens’ girls, the first tournament of their lives,” said Nyssa Coach Kevin Draper. 

Draper said the Bulldogs are looking for more players to round out the team as the season progresses.

JORDAN VALLEY TRACK AND FIELD

THE MEET: The Jordan Valley track and field team opened the season in Harper last Friday, March 16, taking part in the Diana Thurmond Invitational.

THE MEET: The Hornets welcomed 11 teams to open the high school track and field season at the Diana Thurmond Invitational last Friday.

HIGHLIGHTS: The Harper boys picked up first place finishes by Morgan Bulter in the 100-meter race, long jump and triple jump events. Garrett Fisher placed first in the shot put.

THE MATCH: The Vale girls golf team started the year off with a 9-hole day in Weiser on Wednesday, March 14. Due to low team numbers, the Vikings did not post a team score.

INDIVIDUAL SCORES: Miranda Raven, 61; Hannah Hansen, 69; Sydnee Bolyard, 70.

COACH’S COMMENT: “This was good start for us,” said Vale Coach Tom Snook. “Our girls played well for the first time out. The kids are looking forward to getting some more holes in this upcoming week.”

NEXT UP: The Vikings were scheduled to host Nyssa and Ontario at Country View Golf Course on Tuesday, with results not available at press time.

ONTARIO TENNIS

THE MATCH: The Ontario tennis team opened the season with a 6-3 loss to Payette on Tuesday, March 13, bouncing back with a 7-5 victory over Payette on Thursday, March 15.
