“This team is on the verge, and the good thing about being 0-5 is that we will be underestimated, and will surprise some people,” Bulldog coach Tracy Cleaver said.
Despite the final score, Cleaver said the team played strong and had some great at-bats in the contest.
“We started the game solid and swinging hard, played fairly tight defense,” the coach said.
With Nyssa down 9-5 in the top of the seventh, Madi Mitchell got on with a walk, and then advanced to second and was scored by Olivia Olvera’s single to centerfield.
Two batters later, Kassidy Hashagen drew a walk and Lucy Trujillo followed her up.
The coach lauded Irma Ibanez’ performance at the plate, “just missing on her last at bat to get on one more time and go 4 for 4.”
That put the bat in senior Asu Trujillo’s hand in the seventh, and put two more runs on the board.
Nyssa started league play last Friday, April 1, with a challenging doubleheader at home. Weston-McEwen came away with two wins 4-15 and 3-23.
Up next: The Nyssa team was set to face Baker on the road Tuesday, April 5, past press time, and then travels to Enterprise for a 1 p.m. game on April 8.
