Good morning.
We’re keeping a close eye on the Oregon Legislature, where measures important to Malheur County are on hold.
Senate Republicans, including Sen. Lynn Findley, R-Vale, continue to skip sessions of the Senate, stopping all action on bills. That means money for local projects is in jeopardy as are other measures that could benefit the local community.
A deadline looms – the Legislature must adjourn by June 25. If the walkout continues, every bill pending, such as the one to fund the Ontario Recreation Center, would disappear. Gov. Tina Kotek could summon legislators back for a special session to pass budget measures.
Keep an eye on the Enterprise and our partners at the Oregon Capital Chronicle to see how this political stalemate ends.
Meantime, plan to learn more about child poverty in Malheur County. The reporting team from USC’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism recently wrapped up two weeks of reporting with the Enterprise. The result is a five-part series we’ll launch soon.

Jeff is hanging out at the shelter in Ontario operated by the Ontario Feral Cat Project.
CATS: Once bullied, Jeff’s now ready for home
Jeff is an awesome 3-yea- old neutered male. He is up to date on his vaccinations, he’s negative for FeLV but positive for FIV.
FIV is NOT a death sentence. He can live a long healthy and happy life with FIV. We give him a supplement to help boost his immune system, but is a very healthy boy.
He was dumped at a local business where there is a colony of cats. He was beat up by some of the resident cats – they bit through his paw and muscle. He was in a cast for several weeks, but he’s doing much better now and has healed.
He is a very sweet and handsome boy. He’s just hoping to find a family to love him and to start his happily ever after. He is an indoor cat only for his continued safety and no declawing would be permitted.
Come meet Jeff on Saturday to see if you have found your newest family member.
SATURDAY ADOPTION EVENT: Every Saturday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Constance McCullough House, 84 N.W. 2nd St. in Ontario.
