The latest news from your Malheur Enterprise

Good morning.

Now, you can get there from here.

The Oregon Department of Transportation said crews working around the clock in recent days have punched their way through the landslides that shut down U.S. Highway 20 east of Juntura.

One lane opened on Wednesday, June 14, with a pilot vehicle leading traffic through. Both lanes were expected to be open soon.

Meantime, the people of Nyssa gathered on Tuesday, June 13, to change the name of a city park to honor Joe “JJ” Johnson, the reserve police officer. Johnson was shot to death while responding to a reported domestic abuse on April 15.

City officials elected to rename North Park, on Locust Avenue at North Fourth Street, as Joe Johnson Memorial Park. The park is just two blocks from where the fatal shooting occurred.

The city of Nyssa on Tuesday, June 14, dedicated a city park as JJ’s Park, in honor of slain reserve police officer Joe Johnson. (LES ZAITZ/The Enterprise)

SPECIAL REPORT

We are putting the finishing touches on “Children of Poverty,” a special report to be published in the Enterprise on Thursday, June 22. The in-depth series examines circumstances that lead Malheur County to have one of the worst rates of child poverty in Oregon. The five-part series is the result of months of work by a special team of student journalists from USC’s Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism.

NEW FACE AT THE ENTERPRISE

The weather seems to be hotter longer. Range conditions are changing. And the cattle industry and farmers face challenges all around. The Enterprise this week welcomed Shreya Agrawal as a reporting fellow from USC’s School of Communication and Journalism.

Shreya will be exploring the impacts of climate on Malheur County, drawing on local, state and national experts.

She just graduated from USC with bachelor’s degrees in geology and creative writing and a master’s degree in journalism. Among her many accomplishments was being awarded USC’s Order of Arete, given to graduate students for exemplary service to the university community or the world at large and represents the highest honor accorded to graduate students.

She can be reached at [email protected].

T-Bird is hanging out at the shelter in Ontario operated by the Ontario Feral Cat Project.

CATS: Once bullied, Jeff’s now ready for home

T-Bird is a terrific tuxedo. He is such a great kitty. He’s playful, curious and the best neighborhood watch kitty you could ask for.

He loves bird and squirrel watching and just keeping a watchful eye on everything going on in the building and outside.

He gets along great with our other building kitties, especially Kato. They are great buddies!

T-Bird is 2 years old, neutered, UTD on his vaccinations and tested negative for FeLV & FIV. He is an indoor cat only for his continued safety and no declawing would be permitted.

Come meet T-Bird on Saturday to see if you have found your newest family member.

SATURDAY ADOPTION EVENT: Every Saturday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Constance McCullough House, 84 N.W. 2nd St. in Ontario.
