Headlines from Malheur County’s leading newspaper

Good morning……

Prepare to pay more for what you buy, from shoes to computers to tomatoes.

That’s the message of national experts as the country digests news of President Donald Trump’s sweeping new tariffs.

A tariff is a tax imposed on a good coming into the U.S. The tax is assessed on the importer, whether it’s of a 2×4 from Canada or avocadoes from Mexico. Economists say that increased cost in some fashion gets passed on to consumers.

When those impacts will show up isn’t clear, and the Enterprise is working to track how this will affect the people of Malheur County.

Congressman Cliff Bentz, the Republican from Ontario, hasn’t responded yet to the request from the Enterprise for his reaction to the tariffs.

A month ago, with tariffs announced just on Canada and Mexico, Bentz told the Bend Bulletin, “I think prices will increase,” adding, “I hope they don’t, because I go to the grocery store often, and the prices are really high.”

He also suggested in an interview with Portland’s KATU that the tariffs were needed to protect the onion industry.

“The people in the onion business are hopeful that some of the onions flooding in from Mexico will slow down, and their businesses won’t continue to be on the verge of insolvency,” Bentz said.

As the tariffs take hold, we want to hear from consumers, business owners, farmers and ranchers about the impact. If you already have been notified of a price increase from a supplier, for instance, let us know. Send an email to reporter Steven Mitchell ([email protected]).

Meantime, here’s recent reporting for your local journalists at the Enterprise.
