The latest from the Malheur Enterprise

Good morning……

Malheur County could be in for a challenging couple of days as a winter storm brings snow and wind that could lead to whiteout conditions.

The weather is expected to change later Thursday morning, and the Enterprise will provide updates throughout the day.

Be ready for tough driving, likely closures of Interstate 84 and even possible power outages.

You can help us by being our eyes and ears all over Malheur County. Send your information and photos by email to Editor Les Zaitz ([email protected]).

The storm comes as we provide a special report on what state officials are doing to cut down on freeway closures. Economists have calculated than an hour of closure costs all motorists on average $12,500 to $23,800.

Meantime, the community rallied when officials said they couldn’t get a warming shelter open for a shortage of volunteers. The shelter opened Tuesday night at the Malheur County Fairgrounds for overnight care of unhoused folks. Temperatures were hovering around 0 degrees overnight, posing a significant risk to those living outdoors.

Here’s recent reporting for our team and other colleagues in Oregon.
