The latest from the Malheur Enterprise

Good morning……

Malheur County is deeply affected by what happens in Washington, D.C., and President Trump is making good on his promise to remake federal government.

But tracking real impacts isn’t easy at this point. Today, for instance, federal employees are under a deadline to signal that they will take a buyout from their job. Malheur County has about 200 federal employees. The administration hopes to cut up to 10% of the federal work force.

We’ll track developments here as we can and ask federal employees to reach out to us, privately if necessary, to help us. And much of Malheur County’s land is in federal ownership and money to tend that land – roads, wildlife and resources – is in the federal budget. It’s not clear yet how the budget reductions being sought will affect all of that.

The changes will play out over weeks and months and at the Enterprise we’ll do our best to bring you facts – not rumors, not guesswork. Readers are welcome to suggest stories, report what they are experiencing or otherwise help with reporting on this important topic. Send me a message at [email protected].

No other news organization in the area can provide this kind of deep reporting. It’s not easy and it’s expensive. But we consider it our duty to you and to the community. When something big happening, you can always count on the Enterprise to get it fast, to get it right, and leave peddling rumors to others. Your support by subscribing or donating makes it possible.

Here’s recent reporting for our team and other colleagues in Oregon.
