The latest from the Malheur Enterprise

Good morning……

When our team got word last week of a shooting in Owyhee Junction, we swung into action immediately.

We reached out to authorities. We reached out to people in that rural community. And we dispatched photographer Angie Sillonis to get to the scene.

At every step, we had two goals.

One was to provide the community accurate information. We don’t repeat rumors even as they flood social media. In a circumstance like this, bad information going public can be costly.

The second goal was to provide the most complete account we could of what happened. Make no mistake. This was an extraordinary event. If this had happened in a big city, news crews and their satellite trucks would have swarmed the scene. We wanted to fairly and accurately report how the day unfolded.

The result was we did what we have always done on a major news event – delivered information rapidly and accurately. We provided an exclusive account and vital information about the man responsible. His relatives trusted us to make him more than a name and an address. Law enforcement officials from Sheriff Travis Johnson to Oregon State Police Kyle Kennedy were immeasurably helpful.

No other news organization in the area can provide such deep reporting. It’s not easy and it’s expensive. But we consider it our duty to you and to the community. When something big happening, you can always count on the Enterprise to get it fast, to get it right, and leave peddling rumors to others.

Here’s recent reporting for our team and other colleagues in Oregon.
