The latest from the Malheur Enterprise

Good morning……

It’s a changing of the guard in a lot of public offices as 2025 takes hold.

For the first time in years, Malheur County won’t have a direct pipeline to the Oregon Legislature. Lynn Findley of Vale, a Republican, retired as the state senator and we’re now served by Mike McLane, an attorney from Powell Butte. McLane officially takes his seat Jan. 13.

And a day later, Vale gets a new mayor. Alex Hartwell will get sworn in on Jan. 14, succeeding Tom Vialpando.

And state offices change as well. Dan Rayfield is your new attorney general, Tobias Read shifts from being state treasurer to secretary of state and Elizabeth Steiner, former state senator from Portland, becomes state treasurer.

There’s another change in Malheur County that came with the flip of the calendar. The Argus Observer newspaper in Ontario is now a weekly after once operating as a daily. The newspaper is owned by an Arizona company.

That Malheur County has two weeklies is remarkable in this day and age. Some counties have no local newspaper, relying on digital news.

At the Enterprise, we continue to focus on delivering local news that matters, including important investigative reporting that no one else is doing in our area. You’ll see an important instance of that on our website on Monday.

If you’re not a subscriber yet, why not join in today? For $7.50 a month, you can get our digital service and keep up every day with news that is most important to you. The process is secure and takes just a couple of moments.

Meantime, here’s some of the news from the quiet holiday period.
