The latest from the Malheur Enterprise

Good morning and I’m glad you’re here.

For the Enterprise, it was all hands on deck for the state football championship games.

No other news organization performed as the mighty crew of your local newspaper.

We had people in Bend at all three games – Harper, Adrian and Vale.

As the games unfolded, we fed photos direct from the field to our Facebook followers, along with scoring updates, an effort led by reporter Steven Mitchell. No one else provided such service.

Photographer Angie Sillonis masterfully handled duties at the back-to-back Vale and Adrian games.

But she had help.

Susan Barton, our Nyssa correspondent, fed photos of the fans.

And we even had student photographers pitch in.

Kerington Kinkade, a fifth grader, and Gia Franklin, a sixth grader, worked under Angie’s direction to get fan shots.

I handled the Harper game, played at Bend’s newest high school, Caldera.

You’ll find all of our work in the three photo galleries we published that provide you dozens of photos.

Covering three title games 250 miles from home is no small task for a family-owned news organization. But it was a big weekend for Malheur County for a number of reasons. First, Harper was in its first-ever title game. Second, it was the first time in county history that teams competed for the state title in three different divisions.

This is just an example of how committed the team at the Enterprise is to bring you unmatched local journalism.

We also have served up local stories no one else has, from the state actions against two Ontario care homes to a businessman’s pitch to transform a decrepit Vale factory into a new business.

Our work continues as our profession continues to be buffeted by change.

The publisher of the Argus Observer announced on Wednesday, Dec. 4, that the Ontario newspaper was cutting down to once a week.

This comes just months after the Argus in March shifted down from four days a week to two.

“When we make this shift, you’ll see even more emphasis on the local news in both print and online,” Publisher Jeff Schumacher wrote in a note to readers earlier this year.

In the more recent announcement, the Argus publisher said, “We are your community news organization and, going forward, you’ll see increased emphasis on local news.”

He didn’t elaborate, but across the country it’s clear the readers like you are hungry for accurate news they can trust.

That’s what we work hard day in and day out to provide at the Enterprise. We do so with a fearless commitment to the truth, even when it offends powerful figures in the community.

Here’s some of the recent news produced by our award-winning team. Reach me anytime with comments, story ideas, questions and more – [email protected].
