The numbers are perplexing.

Page after page, line after line, the report from the Oregon Department of Education tells us something about how our schools are doing.

The results of tests are out now.

They show how students from elementary grades to high school are doing in math, English and science.

The information will reveal if third graders are reading any better than they did last year or five years ago. The numbers will tell us what share of high school juniors are ready for college – or work.

At a state level, the numbers are so sobering the education director called for “urgency” in responding.

Gov. Tina Kotek weighed in too.

“We must double down on our commitment and collaboration to fix the gaps in our system that are failing students,” she said.

Education reporter Steven Mitchell is working on a story to share with you clearly how schools in Malheur County are performing. He’ll be asking local school leaders their reactions – and what steps they have underway to improve classroom education.

This is vital for our community. The future of Malheur County, as always, depends on students read to assume their roles in our society.
