The latest from the Malheur Enterprise

Good morning and we’re glad you are with us.

Just 10 days after our investigative report on Greg Smith, the board that oversees his work at the Columbia Development Authority took action. The board voted to roll back a big salary increase – and have Smith pay back the extra pay.

We work hard to hold public officials accountable, and others in the profession take note.

The efforts by the Enterprise to get public records got national attention on Thursday. One of the nation’s top journalism organizations carried this story: An Oregon paper was repeatedly denied public records. Its fight for transparency ended in a major victory.

And Portland’s KGW included Enterprise Publisher Les Zaitz in a recent look at efforts around Oregon to rebuild journalism through nonprofits; Nonprofit news orgs aim to fill the void left by Oregon’s receding print publications

We hope you and others in the community are proud that Malheur County is home to one of the best news organizations anywhere in the U.S.

You can be a supporter of this by subscribing or donating to our News Fund.

Meantime, here’s what we’ve covered in recent days to give you stories you won’t find anywhere else.
