The latest from the Malheur Enterprise

Good morning and we’re glad you are with us.

Like many of you, we’re catching our breath after days of sprinting to cover the terrible wildfires that struck Malheur County.
We’re hoping the worst is behind for us all, but there is a long fire season still ahead.
If more major wildfires develop, you can count on us to be right there for you.
We feel a profound duty to give people immediate information so they can protect property, livestock and perhaps even lives.
That means, first, getting the right information.
Our team works so closely with fire incident teams at these times to do that. We don’t rely on social media rumor and speculation.
And we realize time is of the essence. When it’s come to evacuations, you don’t need to read about those several days later. Some of you need that information now.
Our reporters worked at all hours to do that.
But we also provided our news for free. We dropped the paywall that usually requires a subscription to read our work. As a result, thousands and thousands of people relied on our work.
We received several notes from readers, which we prize. As one wrote: “Thank you for the coverage of the fires. I checked every day for any changes in the fires. It was very much appreciated.”
That was a costly decision, for we rely heavily on paid subscriptions to pay our bills. If you found our coverage meeting your needs, we ask for your help.
If you don’t subscribe, please do so. At $7.50 a month, that’s a lot of quality local journalism. The other paper in town provides less of that journalism but charges quite a bit more.
I’ll note that the news industry saw yet another round of announcements that journalists were being laid off. We’re fighting that trend here in Malheur County but community support is essential.
Meantime, here’s other news produced by your nationally-acclaimed Enterprise team:

Volunteer rangeland crews play pivotal role in local firefighting efforts
