The latest from the Malheur Enterprise

Good morning and we’re glad you are with us.

Brace yourself for a continued heat wave in Malheur County.

The National Weather Service in Boise has issued an excessive heat watch, forecasting temperatures over 100 each day for the next week. The weekend will be the hottest, with highs in Ontario reaching 108.

That means people need to take care to avoid heat exhaustion, to check on the elderly and to be attentive to providing pets plenty of water and shade.

The hot weather persists as teams of firefighters continue to check the Cow Valley Fire. The spread of the fire has slowed dramatically, with added acreage burning on the southwest edge in the terrain north of Westfall.

The federal website for the fire warns of “extended burn periods are resulting in extreme fire behavior with winds greater than 5 mph” and “perimeter growth with increased wind speeds where containment features are lacking, or where black edges have not been secured.”

Fire officials will give a live briefing to the community about progress and what’s ahead in a public meeting. The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, at the Vale Senior and Community Center.

At the Enterprise, we continue to closely monitor fire conditions and report developments as warranted.

Here’s what’s making the news.
