Copy of The latest news from your Malheur Enterprise

Good morning.

Legislators delivered good news and no such good news as they finished their work.

They approved another $5 million to help bail out the Treasure Valley Reload Center. That covers less than half of what’s needed to get the center operating, but officials expect to have the money in hand by September.

That money came to help the onion industry as legislators turned down a chance to help fund a new Ontario Recreation Center. That would have provided the community an outdoor pool and upgraded recreation facilities that would be open to all.

Left hanging is the political fate of Sen. Lynn Findley, the Vale Republican. He joined a walkout in the Seante, skipping enough sessions to trigger a law that bars him from running for his office again. But Republicans are preparing to argue that voters, including those in Malheur County, didn’t know what they were doing with the vote last year and that the measure should be tossed by judges. The lawsuit to do so likely won’t happen for some time.

In other news, the Enterprise presents the second part of its series “Children of Poverty.” This is the kind of deep reporting no other newspaper in eastern Oregon undertakes and provides you the kind of probing journalism important to help you know what’s happening in Malheur County.

And, finally, you should plan on spending some time in Vale this weekend as the 4th of July Rodeo cranks up on Saturday for four days. There are also runs, a pancake breakfast, a dog show open to all, and more. We have full details on what’s happening when and who’s behind it all.
