Local leaders watching bill establishing minimum staffing levels at hospitals
Local leaders are watching a bill establishing minimum nurse-to-patient staff ratios for hospitals and imposing stiff fines for violating them. Backers of the bill say the legislation would ease the exodus of nurses from healthcare and make conditions more tolerable. But, at the same time, hospital administrators contend the law could increase the financial losses hospitals absorbed during the pandemic and lead to less care and services for patients.
Bill to boost Ontario pool gets hearing in Salem
The Ontario Recreation Center got a committee hearing at the Oregon State Legislature. The legislation would allocate $4.5 million to the Ontario Recreation District for the Ontario Community Recreation Center.

Vale student teams up with BLM to develop kids’ fire safety book
Vale High School’s Grace Flynn collaborated with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management in Vale to develop a fire safety coloring book for kids for her senior project. Later this year the agency will distribute the books throughout Oregon and Idaho.
