Nyssa News: Parade will light up town, with Vasquez in honored role

December is approaching and so are the Nyssa Chamber’s events scheduled to light up the holidays!

Congratulations to Petey Vasquez, selected as the grand marshal of the Nyssa Nite Lite Christmas Parade. Petey is a volunteer with the Nyssa Volunteer Fire Department and an EMT, serving the community.

The Christmas tree lighting activity will begin at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3. The tree is located on Main Street at Thunderegg Memorial Park.

Then the parade – a traditional moving one this year – forms at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Park Avenue. Lineup starts at 5:30 p.m. and the parade will start at 6 p.m., winding through Nyssa along Thunderegg Boulevard and Main Street. If you plan to participate in the parade, give the Chamber a call at 541-372-3091 for details.

After the parade, there will be pictures with Santa at a location to be determined.

• The annual home and business lighting contest is on again. If you would like to enter your residence or business contact the Chamber at 541-372-3091 by Friday, Dec. 2.

Driving around town to look at all the lights is an annual tradition with our family. Thank you to everyone who decorates for the holiday.

• Letters to Santa can be posted in the special mailbox located at the main entry to the Post Office. Be sure to include the sender’s name and address to receive a reply letter from Santa.

• An afterschool craft day will be held at the Nyssa Library on Dec. 7 and Dec. 21 from 3 to 5 pm. If you don’t have a library card, Christmas vacation would be a great time to get one and learn about all the opportunities it offers.

The Nyssa library has a great collection of books, both written texts and books on tape, but also access to computers, movies and more. Plus, you can access all the libraries in the Sage Library system.

• Coming events at the Nyssa Senior Center include a dance from 6-9 pm on Saturday, Dec. 3. The cost is $5 per person. Participants are asked to bring finger food, no hot food please. The Dale Borge Band will be featured.

Dec. 6 is the monthly foot clinic starting at 8:30 am. The cost is $20. Call Urte at 541-212-9208 for an appointment.

Lunch is served on Tuesday and Thursdays (except on Dec. 8, and bingo is also played on Tuesday and Thursday at 10 a.m. Join the Nyssa Senior Citizens for $5 per year.
