Two large wildfires were reported Wednesday evening in Malheur County, including one that had covered 2,30 acres on the east side of Owyhee Reservoir, according to the Vale District Bureau of Land Management.

The Sheep Head Fire was reported burning in the Three Fingers Gulch area, according to dispatch records. BLM fire crews were joined by crews from the Jordan Valley Rangeland Fire Protection Association.

Marisa Carney, BLM fire information officer, reported Thursday that the fire was burning in grass and brush and was 75% contained. Four fire engines, two dozers and resources from the Jordan Valley association were handling the lightning-caused fire.

The federal agency also showed a fire six miles north of Westfall that had covered about 250 acres. The Buck Brush fire was reported at 75% contained.

A one-acre fire three miles southeast of Brogan has been contained, the BLM reported.

No structures have been damaged, Carney said.

The fires developed as thunderstorms rolled through parts of Malheur County on Wednesday afternoon. The National Weather Service said Rome clocked a wind gust of 78 mph.

This BLM mapping shows the location of the Sheephead Fire burning on Thursday, Sept. 8, about 16 miles south of Adrian.
