VALE – Malheur County Sheriff Brian Wolfe is inviting the community to take some time to learn about what he and his deputies do and why.

Next month, the sheriff’s office will once again host its annual Citizens Academy. The academy has been happening for about 10 years, Wolfe said.

The academy will run for six weeks, and will bring in representatives from several divisions in the sheriff’s office, including patrol, detective, jail and community corrections divisions. The week that covers the jail will include a tour of the facility.

The final week will focus on the search and rescue division and at the end there will be a dinner for participants.

“The biggest takeaway is why we do the things we do,” Wolfe said. “To the normal person, they drive by and see the cops doing something or they come into the jail and they are not able to bring certain things into the jail… they can understand why we have these rules and regulations and why we do what we do and they get a better grasp of what the sheriff’s office does.”

Wolfe said that there used to be an age limit of 18 years or older, but that that has been relaxed to allow in high school students considering a career in law enforcement.

Each module of the academy will take place on Mondays, and will last two and a half to three hours.

“We’d just love to have a lot of people come and participate. We know it is quite a time commitment but one thing we learned is that after people have started they’ve really enjoyed the Citizens Academy, Wolfe added.
