Registration opens for cornhole fundraiser

ONTARIO – Cops, counselors and an array of would-be cornhole experts are invited to team up and raise money for a good cause in the Ontario Star Center’s first Cornhole Tournament.

The event will be Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Ontario Elks Lodge.

The competition aims to raise money to help the child abuse response center pay for operating costs and seek federal and state grants.

“We survive right now strictly on grant funding alone but there would be more grant funding available if we could match it,” said Dave Goldthorpe, Malheur County district attorney and a member of the Star Center board of directors.

The tourney will be a 32-team, double-elimination contest with cash prizes for the top three teams and a plaque for the winning team. There will also be a 50/50 drawing, and a raffle for a set of Cornhole boards and bags.

Contestants from local law enforcement and social services are expected to participate in the tournament, along with any other teams from the public.

Teams can sign up now through the morning of the event. There is a $50 entry fee per team.

Final sign-in for the tournament will be from 10 to 11 a.m. on Oct. 12, and the action begins at noon.

Cornhole is a game where players take turns throwing bags at a raised platform with hole in the far end. A bag in the holes nets three points, while a bag that just hits the board garners one point. The game continues until a team or player reaches or exceeds 21 points.

For more information on the tourney, call 208-371-1553 or 541-889-7530.

“I would encourage anyone who can to come and support it,” said Goldthorpe.
