NYSSA – Baker didn’t waste any time in taking control of its non-league matchup with Nyssa, on the way to a 38-0 victory Friday night.

“They had too much team speed and truthfully are kids were not ready for that,” said Nyssa coach Lee Long.

Baker scored two touchdowns in the first quarter and added two more in the second for a 25-0 lead going into halftime.

“We met a really good Baker team,” said Long.

Nyssa could not get anything going offensively all night, finishing with just 48 yards on the ground and four fumbles. Meanwhile the Baker County team capped the night with 163 yards rushing. Nyssa’s Landon McDowall led the Bulldogs on the ground with 22 yards.

“Our run game isn’t developed enough,” said Long.

Baker also thrived in the air, with 101 yards passing for the game.

“We came out and executed really well in the first half,” said Baker coach Jason Ramos.

Ramos said the Baker defense was the key for the win.

“Defensively we were just outstanding the whole game,” said Ramos. “And we were able to establish the run early.”

Nyssa showed glimpses of potential – especially defensively – in the second half. Nyssa held Baker scoreless in the third quarter. Baker, though, used a blocked punt early in the final stanza and a touchdown run by quarterback Spencer Shirtcliff with under a minute remaining to cement the win for the visitors.

Long said that while the loss was disappointing, it was just one game of a long season.

“It is what it is, but I still think we are going to be good,” said Long.

Baker went ahead 6-0 with 5:04 to go in the first quarter on Shirtcliff’s touchdown toss to Kaden Myer, and then Gauge Bloomer’s scoring sprint with 2:38 left in the frame pushed the visitors ahead 12-0.

Bloomer added another scoring run early in the second quarter and teammate Riley Flanagan hauled in a pass from Shirtcliff with 3:15 left in the first half for a 25-0 Baker lead.

Nyssa will face New Plymouth Friday in New Plymouth in a non-league contest at 7 p.m.
