NYSSA – Nyssa rocks, particularly this week as Thunderegg Days rolls into town.
Nyssa Elementary School is where most of the action takes place, with rock, craft and food vendors. The quilt show is inside Mac Hall, a great opportunity to view beautiful quilts and cool off as the traditional Thunderegg warm spell will keep things hot. Don’t let the weather deter you from enjoying all the activities planned by the Nyssa Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture.
The Thunderegg Days opening ceremony will be Thursday at noon; a great opportunity to check out the food vendors for lunch.
There will be a variety of music each day, plus extra events like the Outlaw Lawn Mower Dragsters on Thursday with an ice cream social at 7 p.m. and movie at sundown on Friday.
Saturday is a full day with the 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament at 9 a.m., Thunder in the Streets Car and Tractor Show (at South Park, 5th and Reece Streets) starting at 10 a.m. and a fun run at noon.
The day ends with the Bubble Ball Tournament and Thunder in the Skies fireworks.
Whew! That’s just a short list of all the activities. Check out the chamber’s web site, Facebook page or pick up a copy of the July issue of About Town to get all the details. It wouldn’t be Thunderegg Days without the rock tours, departing at 7 a.m. from the elementary school parking lot.
All the yummy food is something I really enjoy at events like Thunderegg Days. In addition to the food vendors at the elementary school, there will be a breakfast on Saturday from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Nyssa Senior Center.
The breakfast is a fundraiser for the Nyssa community dinners held at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Also on Saturday, there will be food at South Park during the car and tractor show – sno cones and lunch consisting of tri tip, beans and cabbage salad.
For a taste of Nyssa history, visit the historic district located on Good Avenue between South 1st and 2nd streets. The Agricultural Museum, Hotel Western and Green Lantern Saloon will be open on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Nyssa Church of the Nazarene will hold a vacation Bible school Aug. 15-19 at South Park from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Free summer lunch for youth ages 1 to 18 is offered at noon at the park.
• Nyssa Library will host a movie at the library on Wednesday, July 17, starting at 2 p.m. “Paper Roll Rocket” is the activity this week as summer reading continues.
• Stay cool, enjoy all the activities and remember sunscreen and water!
