Cowboy author to speak at Malheur historical society dinner

The Malheur Country Historical Society will be hosting its annual dinner Nov. 8 at the Boulevard Grange Hall in Ontario.

Mike Hanley, an artist, historian, author and cowboy, will be the main speaker of the event.

Hanley, a long-time rancher from Jordan Valley, has written and published several books about Oregon’s cattle ranching history. He was also one of the original members of the historical society, which was formed in 1973.

“He will present historical stories about Jordan Valley and Malheur County,” said Bonnie Christensen, one of the organizers of the historical society’s dinner. “It’s a pretty relaxed event. People in the past have read stories and talk about history.”

Hanley will also talk about highlights of his project about veterans he interviewed at the Owyhee basin, as well as the history of cattle ranching in Oregon.

Reservations need to be made by Monday by calling Eunice Guerrant at (541) 889-4610, or Bonnie Christensen at (541) 473-3096.
