Sign up to run for fun at Vale’s Fourth of July celebration

Ruth Boyle (top photo) and Frank Yraguen spent time touching up one of Vale’s iconic history murals last week on Longfellow Street. The touch-up work is necessary as weather and time have eroded portions of the mural.

VALE – Run early, grab some chocolate milk at the end of the Vale 4th of July Fun Run and then go eat pancakes.

Registration is open now for the annual event, put on as a fundraiser by the Vale High School cross country team. For the ambitious, there are 5K and 10K distances, with a registration fee of $25 that comes with an event t-shirt.

For those who want a more leisurely approach, there will be a one-mile walk or run with registration costing $5.

Last year, 110 runners and walkers participated.

All three races start at 8:30 a.m. at the Vale pool.

“No facing timing system needed,” the cross country team explains in its online registration page at active.com. “We are pretty fast with our stopwatch.”

Trophies go to top finishers in the longer runs.

“We cheer for every finisher no matter what your time!” the team said.

And perhaps best of all, the Vale Lions Club breakfast will be underway that morning in Wadleigh Park.

The team uses the money for travel, runners’ camp, and warm-up gear.

Besides registering online, runners can pick up forms at CAPS Auto, Logan’s Market, and Vale City Hall.
