NYSSA – Track meets held during the year provide a glimpse of what may come at the district meet. This year, Burns is showing the Hilanders are the team to beat, especially with results from last Friday’s Don Walker Invitational in Nyssa.

Both the Hilander boys and girls teams returned to Burns with team titles. In both cases, the host Bulldogs were not far behind.

For the boys, Burns scored 117 points to Nyssa’s 112 points. Two 1A schools finished in the top five, with Harper placing fourth and Adrian picking up fifth. The Vale boys were seventh and Jordan Valley was 11th.

The Hilander girls tallied 154 to the Bulldogs’ 133 points. Adrian was fifth and Vale was seventh. The Mustangs girls finished 13th.

The event saw many athletes face a problem not experienced earlier this year: heat. As temperatures hit the mid-80s, some athletes had to deal with cramps and dehydration.

Despite the heat, the meet produced some impressive performances.

Nyssa junior Roberto Amezquita made use of his home track, setting the fastest time in the league in the 200 meters, crossing the tape in 24.08 seconds.

In the same race, Vale freshman Thayer Williams set a personal record of 24.68 seconds, the fourth fastest time in the league.

Williams also set a personal record in the 400-meter race with a time of 52.81 seconds. Williams sits behind only Emmet Klus of Burns in the league standings.

In the distance events, usually more affected by heat than other events, Nyssa sophomore Pedro Chavez clocked a time of 4 minutes, 36.46 seconds in the 1,500 meters. It was the best ever for Chavez, now third in the league standings for the year.

Another Nyssa sophomore, Armando Pedraza, put up the fifth fastest time in the league in the 3,000 meters, at 10:21.92.

The Bulldog sophomore class continued to put up league bests as Aidan Moyes finished the 110-meter hurdles in 18.54 seconds, the third best time in the league.

The Dawgs also now hold the best league time in the 4-by-100 relay. The team of Tye Anderson, Ismael Valentin, Raul Ruiz and Amezquita crossed the tape in 45.29 seconds.

In the field events, Nyssa junior Jose Sanchez completed a throw of 42 feet, 7.5 inches in the shot put, the best in the league.

The Bulldog girls also used their home meet to climb up the league standings.

Nyssa sophomore Olivia Page claims the second fastest 800-meter time after posting 2:33.10. She also recorded a 5:16.43 in the 1,500-meter, also second fastest in the league.

Bulldog teammates Taylor Talbot, Madisyn Hartley, Alexis Hernandez and Kelsee Tucker ran a 53.49 second 4-by-100 relay race, for second place in league. Tucker and Page joined Sailor Hartley and Lily Bybee in the 4-by-400 relay to post the third fastest time in the league, 4:33.24.

Nyssa junior Samantha Moore trails teammate Kierra Hernandez in the league standings in the shot put, but pulled to within three-quarters of an inch after heaving the shot 32 feet, 8.25 inches during the Don Walker.

Harper freshman Corbin Palmer continues to climb up the 1A Special District 4 standings. His time of 17.76 seconds at the Don Walker, a personal best, places him second in the league standings in the 110-meter hurdles. Palmer also set the top time in the league in the 300-meter hurdles with a personal best of 44.19 seconds.

The Adrian group of Wade Bond, Ethan Sheets, Eduardo Munoz and Michael Babcock ran the 4-by-100 relay in 46 seconds, the top time in league.

Antelope junior Michael Babcock picked up a time of 27.80 seconds in the 200 meters, the second-best time in the league.

Nyssa, Vale, Adrian and Harper will meet again Friday at the Baker Invitational.
