In the first year of adding David Bates to the name of the annual Vale golf tournament, organizer Tom Snook finally had to cap the number of teams wanting to play.

Bates, avid golfer and Vale resident, died in a collision in January on his way to work.

“People just kept calling and wanting to play,” Snook said.

On Saturday, 20 teams gathered at Country View Gold Club for a day of golf under perfect conditions, a luncheon, and to spend time at a place Bates loved.

His former golfing partner, Steve Marshall, picked up a team and the Bates family was present throughout the day.

The benefit raises money for both the Vale football and golf programs. Beginning this year, an academic scholarship will be added with the money raised per the wishes of Jessica Bates.
