Vale girls slam Umatilla

VALE – Kelsey Hawley put together a virtuoso performance and the Vale High School softball team racked up 31 hits in eight innings to clinch twin victories over Umatilla during a doubleheader Friday.

The Lady Vikings defeated Umatilla 16-0 in the first game and claimed a 17-1 win in the second contest.

“We really hit the ball,” Vale softball coach Kelly Johnson said.

Led by Kelsey Hawley – who pitched five innings of shutout softball – Vale secured supremacy in the first game early, racking up 11 runs in the first inning on the way to the 16-0 win.

“Hawley threw well, gave us a lot of easy outs, including five put-outs of her own,” Johnson said.

Hawley spearheaded the Viking attack in the second game, throwing seven strikeouts while allowing just one hit and two walks. Vale once again took control early in the second game and never looked back.

“We did just what we needed to do today. We ended the game early and no injuries,” Johnson said.

During the doubleheader, the lady Vikings recorded seven doubles, one triple and three home runs.

Up next for the Vikings is a doubleheader at Riverside in Boardman.

The Vikings travel to Weiser Monday for a 5 p.m. game.
