Nyssa’s young tennis team is making strides as it gains experience this season.

Hosting Payette on Thursday, March 31, the team took an overall loss at 4-6 but claimed significant wins. Coach Kent Blanchard cited Kaley Rindlisbacher, at first singles, for hanging tough through three sets to claim a win – 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 – over Laurel Weiss.

The boys logged the other wins, including Kameron Woodruff at third singles, Ryan Vinyard and Andy Esplin at first doubles and Jaylyn Fuentes and Deardon Woodruff at second doubles.

Blanchard noted those were the first victories of the season for the doubles players.

The Payette contest followed a disappointing road trip to Weiser on March 29, with Nyssa chalking up mostly losses. The team score was 1-9.

The bright spot came at No. 1 singles, where Rindlisbacher had a hard-fought win over Camille Weldon.

Rindlisbacher lost the first set 3-6 but came back to take the second set 6-4 and a 10-3 final set.

In boys No. 3 singles, Health Hartley came close in a tough battle, splitting the first two sets 6-7 and 7-6 but falling 7-10 in the third set.

This week, the Bulldogs played a match Tuesday in Baker City, past press time, and will be at home in Nyssa hosting Weiser on Friday, April 8.
