Bulldogs grab second straight state title

For the second consecutive year and the 12th time in the school’s history, the Nyssa wrestling team is the state’s 3A team champions.

The Bulldogs put up a total of 209 points during the Oregon State School Activities tournament, which concluded Saturday, Feb. 27, in Portland.

Nyssa ran away from the rest of the teams, putting up 209 total points compared to second-place La Pine’s 147 points. Third place went to Glide with 137 points.

The Vale team cracked the top 10 as the Vikings wrapped up the tournament in ninth place with a total of 85 points.

Three wrestlers claiming individual titles led the Bulldogs.

After winning the crown in both his freshman and sophomore years, Nyssa junior Heath Hartley claimed a third individual title in the 120-pound division. Hartley defeated Creswell’s Blaine Rodolf in the championship match, taking a 5-3 decision. The win places Hartley with a 40-1 record for the year and sets him up to become a four-time champion during his upcoming senior year.

Also taking a personal title was Nyssa junior Jose Candelas in the 182-pound class. Candelas took a 7-2 decision over Dayton’s Andres Gonzalez in the final match to take the honor.

Joining the two on the individual podium was Nyssa junior Osiris Tapia, the champion at 285 pounds. Tapia was able to take a 3-1 decision over Cascade Christian’s Moses Jackson to the title and ends the year with a 46-2 record.

Ending his career with the Bulldogs was senior Andrew Deleon. Deleon grabbed a second place showing in the 113-pound division after suffering a major decision loss to undefeated La Pine’s David Kerr, 12-3. Deleon finished his final year on the team with a 35-9 record.

Also picking up a second place showing was Nyssa’s Ryan Vineyard. The junior fell to Riverside’s Aristotle Rockwell in a major decision bout at 126 pounds, 11-3.

Bulldog junior Nathan Dorathy added points to the team total, taking a fifth place showing at 138 pounds. Dorathy took the placement after a forfeit by Pleasant Hill’s Jim Pray.

An additional Bulldog senior saw his career with his Nyssa teammates end as senior Jose Lopez grabbed second place in the 152-pound class. In overtime, Lopez suffered a 5-3 defeat at the hands of Coquille’s Wyatt McCarthy.

Second place also went to the Dawg’s Joshua Bongiorno with his coming in the 160-pound weight division. Bongiorno was pinned by Glide’s Dylan Potter at the 4 minute, 26 second mark of the match. The Nyssa senior finishes his career with a mark of 36-12 for the year.

A Bulldog freshman made his mark on the state platform. Jose Sanchez was able to take a 4-3 decision over Harrisburg’s Layten Briggs and claim third place at 182 pounds.

“We wrestled well as a team and the kids really came through,” said Nyssa head coach Luke Cleaver. “Some of the kids had really tough draws, but we put it together and took the title. Now, we start getting ready for next year.”

For the Vale team, senior Jose Rayo-Landa wraps up his wrestling career with a second place finish in the 132-pound class. In the final match, Rayo-Landa fell to Harrisburg’s Dax Bennett by major decision, 12-3. Rayo-Landa ends the season with a 31-7 record.
